How to care for mirror glass

Tuesday 1st October, 2019

With its light-reflecting qualities and luxurious looking finish, mirror glass is an aesthetically pleasing way to add depth and give the illusion of more space. Frequently used in bathrooms, bedrooms or applied to wardrobe doors or feature walls, mirrored furniture is a visually stunning decorative choice that is the perfect finishing touch to a room’s décor.

However, to keep the unique reflective surface of mirror glass looking the best it can, it's important to adopt a regular cleaning routine.

Here is a list of handy tips ensure that your mirrored furniture maintains its sparkle.

Layers of dust can cause mirrored furniture to lose its glittering appeal. To combat this, we recommend spraying a glass-suitable cleaner onto a soft microfibre cloth and cleaning the surface thoroughly.

Once you are satisfied that all dust has been removed, give it a once-over with a dry cloth. It’s important to always check that what you’re using is suitable for glass furniture, as alternatives such as general-purpose cleaning spray can dull the overall appearance of the glass.

Scratches & Chips

Scratches and chips can be tricky to remove from mirrored glass, so we advocate a preventative rather than curative approach here!

Be mindful as to where you place glass furniture and be careful what items you are placing on it. Avoid rough or sharp objects and use subtle rubber pads in conjunction with things such as cups, vases and ornaments to ensure that they stay where they are, and remove the risk of them scratching the surface of the glass.

If the unfortunate does happen, paste wax furniture polish can be used to fill in the scratch. Then, the surface should be buffed down to smooth it over. However, we always advise that you seek advice from a professional before taking any action, especially if the scratch or chip is particularly deep.

Stains & Smudges

The reflective surface of mirrored furniture can make it susceptible to fingermarks. However, similarly to the removal of dust, smudges can easily be swept away with a spray of a mirror-safe glass cleaner and a soft cloth, taking care to avoid leaving residual streaks.

If you are looking to apply mirrored applied to furniture such as cabinets or dressing tables, bear in mind that if you use the furniture to store products such as lotions, cosmetics and hair dyes, these can sometimes cause stains if they are spilt onto mirrored glass which may be more difficult to remove. If a spillage does occur, clean it off as quickly as possible by gently dabbing at it with a damp cloth, making sure to thoroughly dry the area afterwards.
